At S & J Wellness, we understand the complexities that come with adoption, whether you are an adoptee, adoptive parent, or a birth parent. Our approach to therapy provides a safe and understanding space to explore your unique experiences with adoption. We use evidence-based practices tailored to address issues such as grief, trauma, identity exploration, and attachment concerns. Recognizing that adoption experiences are deeply personal and diverse, our therapists are equipped to support clients navigating the emotional landscape of adoption-related challenges. For BIPOC clients, we provide culturally responsive care that respects and integrates your experiences, identity, and the complex feelings and emotions that may be part of your adoption process.
Therapy for Adoptive Parents
You may wonder if you’re parenting the right way. After all, you have to consider cultural factors, attachment concerns, and may have anxiety about parenting the “right way.” If this sounds like you, family therapy or individual therapy can help to work through these emotions and learn skills to increase attachment and bonding between you and your adopted child. Becoming a parent to a child who you choose to adopt is unselfish and says a lot about you as a person. Feelings of uncertainly and even anxiety are normal and therapy is a great place to process these emotions.
Therapy for Adopted Children
Depending on the age of adoption, attachment and bonding may be affected for your adopted child. This is true especially if the circumstances surrounding the adoption are traumatic. Therapy can help adopted children understand their grief, gain insight into complicated emotions, and process any trauma or anxiety that they may be facing. Our child and teen therapists use evidenced based interventions such as Play Therapy, Trauma Focused CBT, and Relational and Attachment work to help your child adjust, cope and process their adoption. Therapy can also be beneficial to help your child learn the skills they need to thrive and be successful in life.
Therapy for Adopted Adults
You may be conflicted about feelings towards your bio family and your adopted family. You may love your adopted family but still have questions relating to the adoption and thoughts about your bio family. These types of feelings often come with guilt or confusion, but we want you to know that these are very normal emotions for being an adopted adult. Perhaps you have anger towards your bio family, that is okay too. Therapy for adopted adults is a way to process and understand the deep attachment concerns that come from these very normal feelings. Our therapists have experience in trauma, and we have therapists on staff who understand the very unique complexities of being adopted.
Therapy for Biological Family
For biological family members affected by adoption, we offer supportive therapy that addresses the unique challenges you may face. Whether you are a birth parent processing grief and loss, or a sibling adjusting to new family dynamics, our therapists provide a space for healing and understanding. We help you navigate complex emotions, such as guilt, anger, or confusion, and work towards making sense of these complex emotions.
